ACADEMIC SERVICES

The University of Portland makes a sincere commitment to all student-athletes for their education and graduation. To fulfill this promise, Academic Services for Student-Athletes has four main objectives:

  • To assist every student-athlete in graduating on time
  • To protect the academic integrity of the University
  • To comply with all rules, regulations, and procedures of the University and the NCAA
  • To promote the athletic eligibility of all student-athletes.

    Academic Assistance
The University hosts a wide array of academic resources to support the needs of student-athletes and to complement classroom instruction. It is critical for student-athletes to be proactive and to seek out the academic enrichment opportunities available. Professors are your best resources. Take advantage of their assistance by visiting during posted office hours. The Integrated Writing Center and the Math Resource Center (both located in Franz Hall 119) provide advice for sharpening core academic skills. Additionally, tutoring is available in specific subject areas. With questions, for assistance, or to arrange for tutoring, please see the Academic Advisor for Student-Athletes (located in the Chiles Center).

Academic Advisor for Student-Athletes (Dan McGinty, 503.943.7723, mcgintyd@up.edu)
The link between the Athletics Department and the University academic community is the Academic Advisor for Student-Athletes. Dan McGinty is available to give special attention to academic issues that may arise in connection with participation in the intercollegiate athletics program. This includes coordinating the tutoring program, acting as a liaison between coaches and professors, and facilitating the early registration procedure for student-athletes. Dan works to complement the department/school academic advisors who direct the programs in each of the University’s academic disciplines.
