Darren Cooper’s 25-footer at the buzzer goes off the back rim as the Division-II Redhawks continue their impressive early season run
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Pilots did everything necessary for a win offensively Wednesday night against Division-II Seattle, but the Redhawks (3-0) pulled off their second upset of a Division I program this season with an 88-85 victory over the Pilots (1-3) Wednesday night at the Chiles Center.
Portland shot 52 percent from the field, had five players reach double figures, gained a 40-28 edge in the paint and 35-17 advantage in points off turnovers, but the Redhawks managed to stay close and capitalized with strong shooting down the stretch to earn the win.
"Statistically we did a good job offensively," Portland head coach Michael Holton said. "But the difference in the game was that we were not able to get defensive stops in succession. Offense is fun and it’s great that we scored 85 points, but defense wins games and tonight our defense never dictated the flow of the game."
The Redhawks also defeated University of the Pacific on the road in Stockton, Calif., 72-71, on Nov. 5 in an exhibition contest. Jeffrey McDaniel was the hero then with a game-winning layup in the closing seconds. McDaniel again put the Redhawks on his back late in the game with 10 second half points and numerous clutch plays in the waning minutes.
Portland led from the tip until the 3:40 mark of the second half, when Sam Kirby made a layup to put the Redhawks up 77-75. The teams traded baskets until McDaniel converted three of four free throw attempts to put Seattle on top 86-83 with 28 seconds remaining.
After a missed UP three-pointer, Bernard Seals made one of two from the charity stripe to make it a two possession game. Portland sophomore forward Marcus Lewis made a putback, cutting the lead to 87-85 with three ticks on the clock. Kirby netted one of two free throws following an immediate foul and Darren Cooper’s desperation 25-footer at the buzzer went off the back rim.
Seattle scored 50 second-half points to overcome a 46-38 halftime deficit. The Redhawks shot 55 percent from the field, made 11-of-24 three-pointers and 17-of-25 free throw attempts.
"The one thing that stands out so far in this early part of the season is that we need to learn how to play better with leads," Holton added. "We looked different after we had a decent lead and Seattle did an excellent job of hanging around and bringing our offense to a standstill late in the game."
Portland held a 61-50 lead with 12:49 left in regulation, but the Redhawks chipped away on the shoulders of McDaniel and Seals. McDaniel started the run with a lay-up and created a pair of easy baskets for Adam Moore with dribble penetration. Seals then scored nine points and McDaniel added five during a 19-9 run leading up to the lead change.
The Pilots were able to control the first period behind a balanced offensive attack. Seven players scored in the period led by Marcus Lewis’ nine points. Lewis finished with a team-high 19 points, while Donald Wilson, Kevin Field and Cooper each added 13. Senior guard Pooh Jeter had 11 points and a career-high 10 assists for his first career double-double.
Seals led all scorers with 23 points, while David White had 17, McDaniel 15, Sean Namanny 14 and Kirby 11.
Portland will next travel to Winthrop and Charlotte for a pair of road games over Thanksgiving weekend. The Pilots and Eagles will meet on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. (PST), while UP and Charlotte will take the court on Monday, Nov. 28 at 4:30 p.m.
