STOCKTON, Calif. --- The University of Portland Pilots conclude the 2008 season with a 3-0 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday afternoon at the Pacific Community Bankers Classic. Portland claimed the consolation final win with scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-21 and will end the season with an 8-24 overall record.
Senior K.C. Fox paced both teams with a match-high 14 kills (.458 hitting percentage) and added six digs. Senior Ashley Grayson and sophomore Jessica Clemens each connected on eight kills and six digs.
Junior setter Kaylyn Jones dished out a match-high 33 assists and also added nine digs.
Senior Jennifer Sheedy posted the match-high in blocks with five and also connected on six kills.
A tight start to the first set had the teams sitting at 4-4. There, three straight Wolf Pack errors followed by a Shelley Sievers kill would sling Portland on a 16-8 run. The Pilots would sit comfortably at 20-12 before closing out the set.
Portland started the second set earning the quick 2-0 lead off a Marissa Plummer kill and a Jones service ace. The Pilots would not once give up the lead for the remainder of the set and had five different players connect on multiple kills. A four-point streak at 9-6 and then again at 21-14 would guarantee the set victory.
In the third set the Wolf Pack came out with gusto and kept the score close until 8-8. There, Sheedy would connect on a kill that put Portland ahead and the Pilots would never look back. Fox connected on an impressive six kills from nine swings for a hitting percentage of .556 on the set.
Nevada’s Nicole Link led both teams in digs with 11.
UP outhit Nevada .337 to .118 and put up eight team blocks to Nevada’s two.
