PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots featured a balanced scoring attack and a stifling defense during an 86-60 non-conference win over the Utah Valley Wolverines on Wednesday afternoon at the Chiles Center. 12 different Pilots scored, while eight players notched at least seven points.
Portland, which held Utah Valley to 11 first-half points, wins its fourth straight game to improve to 7-6 on the season. The Wolverines, who scored 102 points during an overtime win against Portland State on Monday, drops to 5-7.
UP junior Laiken Dollente led the way with a team-high 14 points. Sophomore Jessica Clemens had her second straight game in double figures, finishing with 11 points.
Utah Valley’s Julie McMurray scored a game-high 23 points, while Robyn Fairbanks notched 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The game began with an aggressive Portland team controlling both ends of the court. The Wolverines missed 13 of their first 14 shots as the Pilots jumped out to a commanding 25-2 lead nine minutes in. After Utah Valley responded with six straight points, the Pilots ended the half on a 17-3 run to push the lead to 42-11 at the half.
Dollente had a game-high 12 points at the half, coming on four of six shooting. She also went 2-for-3 on three-pointers during the game’s first 20 minutes. Clemens had nine points at the break as the Pilots shot 54.8 percent (17-for-31) for the half. Utah Valley was a dismal 4-for-31 (12.9 percent) at intermission.
Utah Valley improved its shooting in the second half as Portland utilized its bench. The Wolverines outscored the Pilots 49-44 in the second half, but the game had already been decided.
The Pilots finished at 54.2 percent (32-for-59) shooting for the game. Portland also went 9-for-16 on three-pointers and 13-for-18 from the free throw line.
Senior Karlie Burris hit all three of her three-point attempts and finished with nine points. She also grabbed five rebounds and handed out five assists.
It was a plethora of first’s and career-high’s for the Pilots as every player on the roster saw action. Freshman Nakeisha Brown, who has been nursing a knee injury and has played only 12 minutes prior to today, scored a career-high eight points. She went 2-for-4 from the floor and four of five from the charity stripe.
Senior captain Andrea Wujek hit both of her shots from the field and went 3-for-3 from the line for a career-high seven points.
Clemens also swiped a career-high six steals, while matching Burris with a team-high five rebounds.
UP finished with a huge 41-8 advantage in points off the bench. Portland also claimed a slim 40-39 edge in rebounds, while converting 26 UV turnovers into 27 points.
The Pilots next welcome the BYU Cougars to town for a game on Saturday. The Pilots and Cougars are set to tip-off at 2:00 p.m. at the Chiles Center.
