SAN DIEGO
, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots played the first-place and 16th-ranked San Diego Toreros to a 0-0 draw on Friday night in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer game at Torero Stadium. UP put in perhaps its best defensive effort of the season, fending off 21 USD shots on the night to earn the tie.

The Pilots (8-4-5, 3-3-4 WCC) totaled six shots, with their best look coming courtesy Jarad vanSchaik in the 35th minute. On a give-and-go play with Ryan Luke, vanSchaik was able to fire a right-footed shot towards the left post. vanSchaik had USD keeper Kelin Briones beat, but his shot was wide by a couple of inches

Luke had Portland’s only shot during the extra time, but his attempt was saved by Briones.

San Diego (11-4-1, 7-1-1 WCC) had eight shots during each half, two in the first overtime and three in the second.

Portland junior goalkeeper Austin Guerrero was huge between the pipes, coming up with seven saves. UP also had a team save to help preserve the tie.

Briones finished with three saves and San Diego held a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Pilots next head to Los Angeles for a conference game against the Loyola Marymount Lions on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. LMU defeated Gonzaga 2-1 on Friday afternoon.
