SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots swept the West Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week awards as guards Jared Stohl and Laiken Dollente were both recognized on Monday. Stohl broke his own school record with 10 three-pointers during a win over Idaho last week, while Dollente poured in 31 points the help the Pilots defeat Montana State.
During Portland’s 82-52 win over Idaho on Dec. 22, Stohl finished 10-for-15 from three-point range for 30 points. The junior from Marysville, Wash., also grabbed a career-high six rebounds and matched his career high of three steals. Stohl previously made nine three-pointers last year versus San Francisco. He became the first college basketball player in the last decade to score 30 points without making a free throw or two-point field goal.
Dollente was 10-for-17 from the field, 5-for-8 on three-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line en route to a season high in points to help the Pilots defeat Montana State 78-75 at the Chiles Center on Dec. 21. The senior from Yakima, Wash., also handed out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds during the win. It’s the third time during her career to score at least 30 points and the first time since scoring 30 at San Francisco on Jan. 27, 2007. Dollente just missed matching her career high of 32 points, which came at Portland State on Dec. 9, 2006. It’s the second WCC Player of the Week award for Dollente this season.
The Portland men (7-4) are set to play at Nevada on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. before ending the year with a home game against The Evergreen State College on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
The UP women (9-3) have won six straight games and are off to the program’s best start since the 1997-98 squad opened with an identical record. The Pilots begin a stretch of three straight non-conference road games with a tilt at Utah Valley at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
