PORTLAND, Ore. --- University of Portland center John Hegarty has requested and been granted a release to transfer from the Pilots men's basketball team, head coach Eric Reveno announced on Friday. Hegarty (New Bedford, Mass.) appeared in seven games off the bench as a true freshman last season, averaging 2.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. The Pilots finished the 2008-09 season with a 19-13 record and placed third in the West Coast Conference despite having no seniors on the roster. The team, including all 12 remaining players, will travel to Australia on Saturday for a 10-day foreign tour with four games against elite competition scheduled.
