SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland guard Nemanja Mitrovic became the fourth Pilot to earn West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors after scoring a career-high 22 points in a win over Boise State last week. Mitrovic shared the weekly honor with Saint Mary’s forward Mitchell Young.
Mitrovic need just nine shot attempts to record 22 points in leading the Pilots to an 88-79 win over Boise State on Wednesday. He went 7-for-9 from the field, including a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range. He also made all three of his free throw attempts, grabbed three rebounds and added an assist in 35 minutes of action. After the Broncos cut the deficit to three points late in regulation, Mitrovic drilled consecutive three-pointers (including one to beat the shot clock) to give Portland separation and ice the game. The Toronto native is now 37-for-69 (.536) from three-point range this season which is good for No. 3 nationally in three-point percentage according to the NCAA (min. 2.5 made per game).
Mitrovic is the fourth different Pilot to earn player of the week honors this season from the WCC. Luke Sikma was the recipient after the first week of the season and Jared Stohl was honored on Nov. 29. Tim Douglas received the award last week for the Pilots. Portland is the only team in the conference with multiple honorees so far this year.
Portland (10-3) is off to the third best start in school history and will return to the court tonight to host Nevada at 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center. The Pilots will then welcome Utah on Friday, Dec. 31 at 4 p.m. Portland is a perfect 6-0 at the Chiles Center this season and has yet to trail on their home floor. Tickets are still available through all Ticketmaster outlets or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
