PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots men’s tennis team concludes a perfect weekend with a 5-2 defeat over the UC Davis Aggies Sunday in a non-conference match at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. Earlier on Friday, the Pilots swept Montana State 7-0 also at home.
"Today was a scrappy effort,” said head coach Aaron Gross. “UC Davis competed hard and made it uncomfortable for us in spots. It was a good test. We have a couple of challenging matches next weekend against Gonzaga and Montana. I think this match helped us prepare for those battles.”
The Pilots (3-3) claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots. The senior duo of Filip Zivkovic and Evan Schleining earned an 8-4 victory while junior Daniel Coelho and freshman Jackson Martin notched an 8-5 win. At the No. 3 position, Aggies Nic Amaroli and Tyler Lee stole the win with a tiebreaker from sophomore Geoff Hernandez and junior Nick Wales.
“Zivkovic and Schleining along with a solid doubles performance by Martin and Coelho were our key performers,” said Gross. “Schleining continues to play really solid singles by clinching the match for us."
In singles action, wins from Hernandez at No. 3 and Zivkovic at No. 1 positioned Schleining with the chance to seal the overall victory. Schleining did not disappoint, putting away the dual victory for the Pilots with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position.
Also recording a singles victory for UP was Coelho at the No. 5 spot. After dominating the first set 6-0, Coelho dropped a close second set 7-5 then bounced back for a third set match win.
The Pilots return to action against Gonzaga on Friday, Feb. 12 followed by Montana on Saturday, Feb. 13. Both matches begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
