PORTLAND, Ore. --- The men’s and women’s tennis teams at the University of Portland announced the signing of three players who have committed to play for the Pilots as freshman next fall. The women’s team added reigning PAC 7 champion
Victoria Troesch (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) while the men’s side has added two accomplished Northwest recruits in
Paxton Deuel (Bend, Ore.) and
Kent Andreasen (Vancouver, Wash.).
TennisRecruiting.net has ranked
Victoria Troesch as the No. 48 player in the 2012 graduating class in Southwest. USTA pegs her as No. 61 in the Southern California singles rankings, highlighted by her first PAC 7 singles championship last season. Andrew Masuda of KSBY
covered Troesch’s signing, which took place just prior to the first round of the CIF playoffs.
"Tori is a great fit for the program. She's a super hardworker with a great attitude and has a lot of potential for D1 tennis," head coach Susie Campbell-Gross noted. "I'm really looking forward to her coming in the fall."
Paxton Deuel is currently ranked No. 2 in the Pacific Northwest in the U-18 division, having won the Oregon State 5A High School singles title last year. A participant in the 2011 Boys 18s National Championships, Deuel also competed in the 2006, 2008, and 2010 Winter Nationals. He also received the USTA Pacific Northwest Scott Eden Sportsmanship award in 2011.
"We are really happy to have Paxton join the program. I think he has a ton of potential to be a great college tennis player,” head coach Aaron Gross commented. “He has a great base to work from, and is committed to working hard to come in next fall and be ready to contribute right away. Plus, he fit in great with our current group of players, which is really important to us with the culture that this group has created and are committed to maintaining."
Kent Andreasen recently claimed his third 4A Greater St. Helen’s League title and has played in three consecutive state championships. The tournament, which takes place in May, has seen Andreasen place in the top four in the past two years. He finished second in 2010. Andreasen was also named the 2010-11 All-Region Boys Tennis Player of the Year by The Columbian following his run in the state championships.
"We are thrilled to have Kent as part of the team at UP. He is a local kid and very familiar with our program. Kent will help us right away as his net game is more advanced right now then 90% of players playing college tennis,” Gross noted. “As he gains confidence and strength I think he will become one of the best PNW players we will have had in the program by the time he is done.”
“We feel great about our early signings,” Gross added. “To get Kent (ranked #3 in the PNW) to go along with Paxton Deuel (ranked #2 in PNW) we feel extremely fortunate."
