Three Pilots Join UP Record Books as UP Continues Indoor Season at UW Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Portland Pilots men’s and women’s track teams competed at the Dempsey Indoor facility for the second time in the last month, this time participating in the UW Invitational. Between the two teams, the Pilots were represented in 11 events, highlighted by three top-ten school records on the women's side. Ruth Croft won the women’s 5000m race followed closely by Rosalind Smith on Friday while Merel van Steenbergen posted the sixth fastest mark in the one mile run by a Pilot with a time of 4:53.71.
Scott Fauble and David Perry led the men's side, capturing 1-2 in the 3000m race on Saturday.
Croft posted the quickest time in the first section of the 5000m race with a time of17:32.23, almost a full second ahead of second-place finisher Heidi Laabs-Johnson of Seattle Pacific (17:33.14). Smith, a transfer in her first semester at UP, placed third in the race for the Pilots with a time of 17:33.39, giving the teammates the fifth and sixth best times in the 5000m run in school history.
On Saturday, van Steenbergen took her shot at the record books in the one mile run. Competing in the second section, the sophomore from the Netherlands posted a time of 4:53.71 to finish seventh in her leg. The time was faster than Kelsey Metcalfe's 4:54.56 in 2006 to give van Steenbergen the sixth best mark in the school history.
Fauble and Perry’s race highlighted the men’s participation in the two-day event. Competing in the second section of the 3000m race, the duo posted the two quickest times to take first and second place, respectively. Fauble posted a time of 8:14.22, milliseconds ahead of Perry’s 8:14.26.
Jarred Basset competed in the third section of the event, posting a time of 8:07.89.
Both teams will take the upcoming weekend off from competition before participating in the West Coast All-Star Mile back in Portland on February 9.
