Bassett Just Misses Qualifying for NCAA Championship
NCAA West Preliminary Results
AUSTIN, Texas --- University of Portland redshirt junior Jared Bassett placed fifth in the third heat of the 3000m steeplechase at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championship Friday night, but just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship with a 15th place overall finish.
Bassett, who entered ranked eighth in the west and 17th in the nation in the event, clocked a time of 8:56.93, the fifth time in as many attempts that he's finished under 9:00.00 this year.
“Jared did a great job,” Portland coach Rob Conner said following Bassett’s performance. “Not advancing is disappointing, but he will now focus on the Portland Track Festival and the Olympic Trials.”
Bassett posted an Olympic B qualifying time last Friday at the USATF High Performance meet in Los Angeles with a personal best of 8:38.87.
