Pilots Sweep Singles Points in Win over Idaho
PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots women’s tennis team is off to their best start in over ten years following back-to-back victories this weekend, highlighted by a 6-1 home victory over the Idaho Vandals Sunday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
After Idaho (0-2) opened the match by taking the doubles point, the young Pilots (2-0) disposed of the Vandals with ease in singles play to open the season 2-0. Portland beat Eastern Washington on Saturday in Eugene, Ore.,
Saroop Dhatt led the freshman charge with a clean sheet (6-0, 6-0) from the third spot while Tori Troesch edged Belen Barcenilla in the four position (6-4, 3-6, 10-8). Maja Mladenovic rounded out the freshman victories with a 7-5, 6-3 win for her first career victory.
“It was a solid start to the season,” Portland head coach Susie Campbell-Gross said after the match. “We got a good team victory today with everyone contributing.”
The returning players also posted solid performances in the well-rounded victory. Sophomore Anastasia Polyakova easily handled the fifth spot with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Sabine Fuchs and Valeska Hoath rounded out the victory. Fuchs captured the first set before getting edged in the second to set up the decisive set. The senior from La Center, Wash., held strong, taking every game en route to the third set bagel.
Hoath, meanwhile, picked up the victory when her opponent, Alejandra Lozano, retired.
Portland resumes play on Sunday with a 5 p.m. match against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene.
