EUGENE, Ore. --- Senior Sabine Fuchs posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory from the second position, but the Oregon Ducks slipped past the Portland Pilots 6-1 Sunday night at the Oregon Student Tennis Center.
It is the first loss of the season for the Pilots, who move to 2-1 while Oregon improves to 6-0.
Despite the final margin, Oregon was barely able to hold off the Pilots. A couple of points the Pilots way and the match could have easily gone the Pilots way.
From the first position, Maja Mladenovic battled Patricia Skowronski. Skowronski took the first set 6-2 and then squeaked by Mladenovic 7-6 (10-8) in the second set.
Freshman Saroop Dhatt gave Nicole Long trouble from the third spot, but eventually lost 7-5 before Long took the second set 6-1.
In the sixth spot, freshman Tori Troesch took Lana Buttner to three sets, ultimately falling 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.
Portland has a quick turnaround, beginning conference play on Tuesday against Saint Mary’s. The match will start at 10 a.m. in the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center.
