No. 40 Saint Mary’s Edges Pilots in WCC Opener
PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior Valeska Hoath posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory from the fifth position, but the Portland Pilots lost their West Coast Conference opener to the No. 40 Saint Mary’s Gaels by a 5-2 score Wednesday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
Portland has lost the last two matches after opening the season 2-0. Saint Mary’s improves to 2-3.
Hoath picked up her third victory of the campaign with the win over Catherine Leduc.
Much of the day belonged to Saint Mary’s, however, which was picked to finish second in the conference.
True freshman Maja Mladenovic started the day off well, taking the first set from the No. 64-ranked Jenny Jullien at the top spot. Jullien recovered, however, and Mladenovic was left with a three set loss against a tough opponent.
The Pilots return to action on Friday morning with a match against Portland State. The crosstown rivals will clash at 11 a.m. in the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
