Pilots Sweep Singles Points in Win over Vikings
PORTLAND, Ore. --- All six singles matches went straight sets as the Portland Pilots women’s tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak with a convincing 6-1 victory over the visiting Portland State Vikings Friday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
Portland improves to 3-2 on the year, while Portland State falls to 3-4.
Portland had little problems against the Vikings in singles play, dominating play from the start as freshman Maja Mladenovic quickly picked up the point from the top spot with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Senior Sabine Fuchs was the next to win her match, winning the first set 6-2 and then cruising to a 6-0 win in the second set.
Freshman Saroop Dhatt, meanwhile, found herself in a tight first set against Kelsey Frey in the third position. Tied at three sets apiece, Dhatt swung momentum in her favor and captured the first set 7-5. The freshman then breezed her way to a 6-1 win in the second set, giving the Pilots the advantage.
The clinching point came from sophomore Anastasia Polyakova. Portland’s top player last season had no problems in the fourth spot on Friday with a 6-4, 6-3 victory, pushing the Pilots back above .500 in the early goings of the season.
With the match already secured, the Pilots gunned for the singles sweep and were able to accomplish just that as senior Valeska Hoath picked up her fourth win of the season and freshman Tori Troesch posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
