Willamette Opener Results
PORTLAND, Or--- A weekend full of travel proved bountiful for the Portland Pilots men’s and women’s track teams.
On Friday, an assortment of Pilots raced at the University of Washington’s Final Qualifier Meet. Melissa Baller got the ball rolling for the Pilots in the first section of the women’s 400 meter run with a heat victory and a time of 58.90.
Julia Fonk and Melissa Hastings carried the momentum into the first section of the women’s mile when they both smashed the five-minute barrier; the duo ran 4:54.44 and 4:56.00 respectively.
Natasha Verma raced her way to a fourth place finish in the first section of the women’s 3000 meter run with a time of 9:39.81.
The men would also fare well at the Dempsey Indoor. Unattached freshman Izaic Yorks ran a tactical race to win the first section of the men’s mile with a time of 4:06.15. Yorks' mile time would have ranked him number two on the all-time Portland indoor list, but he his redshirting this indoor season. Fellow freshman Justin Rocereto would set a PR in the same race with a 4:13.27.
Senior Cody Wells ran a season’s best time of 8:22.99 in the first section of the men’s 3000 meter run; he would take fifth in his heat.
The final event Friday night was the men’s 5000 meter run and it would be dominated by purple singlets. Redshirt sophomore David Perry raced unnattached and won the event with a time of 14:16.06. The race went out slowly and it took a big effort in the last mile from Perry, senior Jared Bassett, and redshirt freshman Woody Kincaid to pick up the pace. The trio ended filling the top three spots in that order.
In the same race, PR’s were set by Kincaid (14:17.55), Robert Krebs (14:22.60), Stephen Kersh (14:29.05), Danny Martinez (14:32.40), Chris Borg (14:32.88), Alex Dillard (14:43.54), and Griffin Hay (14:49.18).
Bassett and Kincaid's 5000 meter times put them in the top-ten on the all-time Portland indoor list. They now rank 9th and 10th, respectively.
While Friday marked the end of the indoor season for the Pilots, some of the team would travel south to Salem on Saturday to open the 2013 outdoor track season at the Willamette Opener.
Sophomore Mark Roetcisoender ran his way to second in the men’s 100 meter dash with a time of 11.14.
Competing in the men’s triple jump, Matt Chastain leapt and bounded to second place with a mark of 13.34 meters.
Portland went two-three in the men’s 5000 meter run as senior David Garcia and freshman Andy Holstrom ran 15:30.31 and 15:38.94, respectively.
To cap off the successful weekend, both the men’s and women’s 4x400 team won their respective heats at the Willamette Openers. The men’s squad ran 3:21.85 and the women’s quartet ran a time of 4:05.39.
The Pilots will have a few weeks off from competing before getting back to the action at the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis on March, 23
