Redshirt-freshman Milagros Cubelli returns for another year of the women’s tennis blog. Nothing is off limits to ‘The Purple Argentine’ as she delves into all things related to the women’s tennis team (and some things not). This week, Cubelli checks in with an update from sunny California...
We realize that we are getting to the end of the season when we start traveling to California to play most of our conference matches. And we realize that we are traveling to California when some of the players are sunburned with the shape of the visor on their forehands and others just peel after forgetting to wear sunscreen during 4 hours matches.
We arrived to San Luis Obispo on Thursday, which is our teammate’s –Tori Trash- hometown. We were very well received not only by the weather but also by Tori’s family and their folks. By the way, Ingrid [Tori’s/Team’s mother], just in case you are reading this: Your enchiladas were bootiful!!!!
But the truth is that there was something better than the warmth of home made food...the joy of going through all the childhood pictures of Tori hung around the house. And when I say joy, I mean THIS:
And THIS:
Moving back to business, we played Cal Poly on Friday and we won. We won in the most ‘movie scripture’ possible way. Tori played the decisive match, when we were tied 3-3, and won in straights sets to give Portland the fourth and conclusive point.
Is winning the decisive match in your hometown, surrounded by a huge crowd of friends just a coincidence? Nope. My coach thinks that it is the result of hard work. But I think it has everything to do with the pre-game routine that we had with Tori at her house the morning before playing Cal Poly…
The next day we played Santa Barbara and it was a very tight loss. It was a battle: six hours of non-stop tennis outdoors. However, I don’t think we lost because of the geographical conditions. I think we lost because we didn’t do our pre-game routine that morning and you guys know how important routines are in sports…
Now we are trying to look for a cow to feed for our next home matches. So, please, if someone knows of a hungry cow just give me a call.
Despite the loss, our first Californian trip of the season was good. I even had time to delight San Luis Obispo with some Argentine moves….
Bye for now,
The Purple Argentine
