While classes are finally winding down at the University of Portland this semester, the Pilots’ track season is in full effect and the team competed in various meets this past week.
A group Pilot distance runners and sprinters traveled to Walnut, Calif. to chase down fast times, personal bests, and, maybe, a tan. While most of the team competed at the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays, a few athletes ran at the Bryan Clay Invitational held at Asuza Pacific University in Asuza, Calif.
Some Pilots did not have to travel very far outside of Portland to notch a PR; these athletes competed Saturday at the Pioneer Invite held at Lewis and Clark University.
Last Thursday marked the opening day of competition at the Mt. Sac Relays and the Pilots had multiple runners entered in the 1,500-meter run.
Freshman Izaic Yorks toed the line in section 1 with some of the best 1,500-meter specialists in the nation and finished with a time of 3:51.85. He ran the same event Friday morning at the Bryan Clay Invitational and clocked a faster time of 3:50.25.
Julia Fonk and Melissa Hastings also competed in the 1,500-meter run at the Mt. Sac Relays. Fonk posted a PR of 4:31.60 in section 6, and Hastings ran a 4:44.13 in section 7.

Thursday at Mt. Sac also played host to multiple heats of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Competing in Open A section of the steeplechase, Stephen Kersh ran a time of 9:31.33. Jared Bassett ran later that night in the Elite Invitational section and enjoyed the fastest opening steeplechase time of his career with an 8:52.66.
