Pilots’ Season Ends as Upset Bid Falls Short
 
SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The eighth seeded Portland Pilots bid to upset the fifth seeded San Francisco Dons fell just short on Wednesday, as the Pilots season ended with a 4-2 loss at the West Coast Conference Championships at the Barnes Center.
 
The Pilots finish the season 8-14 and will look to build off a season that featured four underclassman – including three true freshman – in the starting lineup.
 
After San Francisco (13-9) opened the match with the doubles point, freshman Saroop Dhatt responded with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win from the sixth spot while sophomore Nastya Polyakova claimed a 7-5, 6-0 victory from the second position.
 
Seniors Valeska Hoath and Sabine Fuchs found themselves locked in close match-ups against their respective foes, but both would ultimately fall. Facing Marina Nikolic, Hoath forced Nikolic to win seven games in each set. The final score of the match was 7-5, 7-6 (10).
 
Fuchs, meanwhile, forced Milica Hadzi-Tanovic to three sets.
 
In the fifth position, freshman Tori Troesch led Brooke Irish 5-3 in the third set. Because the men’s tournament is played on the same courts, the match was called off once San Francisco had clinched the team victory.
 
San Francisco advances to tomorrow’s second round, when they will take on San Diego. \
