PORTLAND, Ore. --- Wet, rainy conditions did not put a damper on the performances of many Pilots last Saturday at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore.
Freshman Alex Bowns posted a season’s best time of 3:55.11 and placed third in section 3 of the men’s 1,500-meter run. In the fourth and final heat of the night, Jared Bassett came from behind to seal a victory with a time of 3:48.61.
On the women’s side, Laura Hottenrott and Marit Tegelaar went 1-2 in the second heat of the women’s 1,500-meter run. They ran 4:34.68 and 4:37.64, respectively. Setting a personal best in the third heat of the night, Julia Fonk placed fourth with a time of 4:31.72. Anne Luijten was seventh in 4:33.27.
In the first heat of the men’s 5,000-meter run, Connor Whan bided his time until the last lap when he dropped the field and won with a personal best of 14:53.69. Josh Gorecki raced his way to a second place finish in the second heat of the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:26.83.
Stephen Kersh placed first in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase for his second straight win in that event.
With a jump of 1.62 meters, Katie Lord captured second placed in the women’s high jump.
Katherine Maus posted two impressive marks with a secon-place finish in the women’s long jump and a first-place finish in the triple jump. She had leaps of 18’ 4.50” and 37’ 11.50”, respectively.
Next, the Pilots will race this Friday in Monmouth, Ore., for the John Knight Twilight.
