SALEM, Ore--- Jared Bassett, Tansey Lystad, and Jordan LaBrec might have stolen the show with their record breaking performances, but plenty of Pilots had dominating outings in the West Coast Invitational hosted by Willamette University last weekend.
Bassett led a pack of Pilots in the men’s 1,500-meter run to absolutely scorching times. Placing second overall in the race, Bassett’s 3:43.51 places him fourth all-time for the Pilots in the 1,500-meter run. Woody Kincaid and David Perry finished right behind Bassett with times of 3:45.13 and 3:45.74, respectively. Those times are good for sixth and seventh on the all-time list.
In the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, Lystad ran the second fastest time ever for a Pilot with a 10:38.87. She finished third in the race and cemented a place for her at the NCAA West Regionals later this month.
Already third on the all-time list in the men’s hammer throw, LaBrec moved to second with a throw of 150' 0.75". He was about one foot off the all-time Pilot record of 151’ 4”. His throw on Friday was good for fourth in the meet.
Kent Nowak and Sean Johnston both had positive races in the men’s 800-meter run. With a three second improvement on his personal best and a time of 1:54.09, Nowak finished sixth in the race. Johnston was seventh in 1:55.58.
On the women’s side, Elyse Ulowetz had a personal best run of 2:22.64. She finished tied for fourth in the first heat of the 800-meter.
Julia Fonk raced her way to a fourth place finish in the women’s 1,500-meter run. She ran 4:28.77 for a personal best and is now seventh place on the all-time list. Tori Zellerhoff won the second heat in 4:46.74.
Unattached Pilot runner Charlie McDonald led the “Grape Crush” in the 5,000-meter run. His time of 14:22.50 was a personal best and was fourth in the race. Alex Bowns, Stephen Kersh, and Griffin Hay were the next Pilots in the race and ran times of 14:33.84, 14:34.45, and 14:34.47, respectively.
Natash Verma raced her way to fourth in the women’s 5,000-meter run with a 16:37.69. Teammate Kellie Houser was the next Pilot at 17:08.85.
The 10,000-meter run was a combined event of male and female athletes. Chase Caulkins and Aidan Irish represented the Pilot contingent in the event. They ran 30:47.77 and 31:32.61, respectively. Caulkins finished in second place and less than a second behind the overall winner.
Matt Chastain etched his name in the record books with a jump of 44’ 6” in the triple jump. He finished third in the meet and now has the eighth best leap in Pilot history.
Tying for first in the women’s high jump with a leap of 5’ 4.25” was Katie Lord. She is now third on the all-time list for the Pilots.
Katherine Maus ended up placing second in the long jump and first in the triple jump. She had a leap of 17' 4.75" in the long jump and 37' 5.25" in the triple jump.
