PORTLAND, Ore--- Five men and three women will represent the University of Portland at the NCAA West Regional Championships, which begin on Thursday in Austin, Texas, and last through Saturday.
Qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships is a tall task. An athlete must place in the top-48 times, or marks, in the region before being accepted to the meet. The top-12 in each event at Regionals will move on to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted this year in Eugene, Ore.
Seniors Marit Tegelaar, Lyndy Davis, and Kellie Houser make up the trio of Pilot women running in Austin.
After a substantial personal best in the 5,000-meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays, Tegelaar’s time of 16:32.02 qualified her for Regionals. Davis and Houser will be running in the 10,000-meter run and are ranked in the event 32
nd and 33
rd, respectively.
The Pilot men will send sophomores Woody Kincaid and Robert Krebs, redshirt sophomores David Perry and Scott Fauble and senior Jared Bassett.
As impressive as it is to qualify for just one event, these Pilots are a greedy bunch. Kincaid qualified in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter runs, Perry in the 1,500-meter, the 5,000-meter, and the 10,000-meter runs, and Bassett got the job done in the 1,500-meter run and the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Kincaid, Perry, and Bassett all scratched out of the 1,500-meter and will focus on their primary races. Kincaid in the 5,000-meter, Perry in the 10,000-meter, and Bassett in the steeplechase.
The first Pilots to race will be Davis and Houser on Thursday in the women’s 10,000-meter. They toe the line at 7 p.m. (Pacific).
Thursday at 7:40 p.m. Perry, Fauble, and Krebs race in the men’s 10,000-meter.
On Friday at 7:30 p.m. the men’s steeplechase gets underway with Jared Bassett.
The 5,000-meter runs are held on Saturday. Tegelaar competes at 6:05 p.m. and the gun will go off for Kincaid at 6:45 p.m.
