AUSTIN, Texas--- The rain poured, the wind howled, and Jared Bassett proved lightning can stike twice.
Bassett's NCAA Preliminary steeplechase was pushed back from an original start time of 9:30 p.m. CST to 12:30 a.m. CST due to inclement weather. The delay was not enough to keep Bassett from taking second place in his heat and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. This is the second time in three years Bassett will run the steeplechase among the nation's best.
"It was great, I knew i was in shape and so i stayed relaxed, hung off the leaders, and kicked it in the last lap," said Bassett. He "kicked it in" for time of 8:36.46- a new personal best. "To be honest i wasnt paying attention to pace until i was coming on to the last 100 meters and was like 'whoa'."
The NCAA Championships are June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. and Bassett is not looking too far ahead. "The main focus at Nationals is to advance through the prelims and into the final. (At Nationals) I'll have to take a risk and go out hard with the leaders."
The Pilots have two more opportunities to punch tickets to the NCAA Championships. Woody Kincaid compete in the men's 5,000-meter tonight and Marit Tegelaar looks to hold her own in the women's section. Tegelaar will run at 8:05 p.m. CST and Kincaid wil get going at 8:45 p.m. CST.
