SEATTLE--- If Friday and Saturday was a sign of things to come for the Pilots during this track and field season, then it will be a fruitful one. The squad traveled up to the Dempsey Indoor in Seattle for the University of Washington Invitational and captured some personal bests and heat wins in the process.

Junior Melissa Baller ran 25.99 in the 200-meter dash and, with that time, moved up to second all-time for the distance at Portland. In only her second meet as a Pilot, Arizona State transfer Madison Leek made sure her presence was felt early in her career as she set the 400-meter school record in 57.70. She also won her heat with that mark.

Senior Kent Nowak kept up his good indoor form with another personal best, this time in the 400-meter. His time of 49.93 placed him third in his heat.

Setting an indoor high-jump personal record was Matt Winterer with his jump of 2.04 meters (6'8.25). Matt Chastain jumped his way to a personal best in the triple jump with a hop, skip, and bound of 14.07 meters.

In section 2 of the women's 800-meters, sophomore Lorea Ibarzabal ran a personal best of 2:11.37 en route to a heat win. Senior Melissa Hastings and junior Maddie Hibshman competed in section 2 of the mile. Hastings finished fourth with her 5:02.35 and Hibshman was seventh with 5:03.59.

On Friday night, the Pilot women's DMR team set the school record with their time of 11:40.72. Julia Fonk, Melissa Baller, Ibarzabal, and Sanna Mustonen made up the team. They placed second overall.
In the morning section of the men's 3,000-meter, senior Stephen Kersh captured the heat victory in a time of 8:26.26.

The invitational sections of the men's 3,000-meter saw Ryan Poland come within .46 of a second of setting the all-time best mark for the University of Portland. His time of 8:00.55 was fourth in the fastest section. Also racing in that section was redshirt junior Scott Fauble. He set a personal best with his time of 8:09.52.

David Perry and Alex Bowns placed third and fourth in section 1 of the invite 3,000-meter race with times of 8:19.04 and 8:20, respectively.
