PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots women's rowing team officially opened their fall campaign at the Portland Fall Classic, which took place on Sunday morning on the Willamette River. The Pilots raced five boats at the annual regatta.
 
The varsity eight, which had to deal with a head wind, was the first crew out for the Pilots, covering the 5000 meter course in a time of 18:26.570. That was nearly a minute faster than the varsity eight boat from Seattle U.
 
The event's format was a head race, which means crews started one at a time with about 10-15 seconds in between each boat. Results are based on each boat's time.
 
Following the UP varsity eight was a pair of second eights. The 'A' crew posted a time of 18:15.737, while the 'B' boat had a time of 20:20.059.
 
Next up was the varsity four, who finished on top a four-crew field. The Pilots' time of 20:56.778 was well clear of second-place Seattle U and Portland State in third. Portland's novice eight also won their event with a time of 21:46.500.
 
"The highlight of the day was the varsity four and the novice eight, who raced against the most competitive field," said Portland head coach Pasha Spencer. "We'll be back at work on Tuesday, looking to do some fine tuning before the Head of the Lake. We'll also be looking to improve our times as we had to deal with some changing conditions today."
 
The Pilots will next conclude the fall portion of their schedule at the Head of the Lake Regatta in Seattle, Wash., on Sunday.
