PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Portland women's tennis team concluded its three-match trip to New England with a 4-3 loss to No. 61 Brown Sunday morning. It marks the second match in as many days that came down to the final singles match, following yesterday's 4-3 win at No. 72 Harvard.
Portland (1-5) has only played ranked opponents in its first six dual matches this season.
The Bears (4-3) were able to hold on Sunday with a three-set win at the No. 5 singles position to secure the match.
Brown took the early lead by claiming the doubles point with wins at the top two positions. Pilot freshmen Radina Dimitrova and Tatiana Grigoryan posted a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
Portland responded with singles victories by senior Lucia Butkovska and Dimitrova. Butkovska improved to 4-0 in dual singles this season, while Dimitrova picked up her second win in as many days.
The Bears pulled out a three-setter at the No. 3 position and a straight sets win at No. 4 to take a 3-2 lead, setting up the final two matches.
Grigoryan evened the score with a straight sets win at No. 6, setting up the deciding point between Pilot junior Jelena Lazarevic and Brown's Katie Ta. Ta took the first set 6-4, but Lazarevic battled back to force a third set. The match was down to the wire with Ta pulling it out 6-4 in the deciding set.
Portland will return home and take some time off before its home and West Coast Conference opener on Friday, March 4 versus Brigham Young at 1 p.m.
