th place in the 3,000m at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships on Saturday afternoon. With five laps to go, Buchanan was tripped by Georgetown runner Ahmed Bile, erasing both runners hopes at the title.
Buchanan started the race off strong with the pack. He made a move on the outside and got into seventh place before being tripped and taken out of contention.
"It was extremely disapointing," said head coach Rob Conner. "Reid was in great position on the outside feeling great and ready to run a hard last 1,000 when Bile fell and hit Reid, knocking him down too. Four months of hard work all taken away in the snap of a finger."
In a field that featured the top distance runners in the nation, Buchanan finished the 15 lap race in 8:36.41 dispite the trip. Three time national champion Edward Cheserek of Oregon finished the race in 8:00.40 to take first, while Sean McGorty of Stanford and Justyn Knight of Syracuse placed second and third with times of 8:01.55 and 8:01.85, respectively.Buchanan and the rest of the Pilots will be back in action on Saturday, March 19 at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open.
