LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. – The No. 69 Washington State Cougars defeated the Portland Pilots by a 5-2 margin in non-conference women's tennis action Sunday afternoon at Mountain Park Racquet Club. The Cougars improve to 14-4 on the season, while the Pilots fall to 4-7 with six losses to ranked opponents.
Washington State started the scoring by taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
In singles play, the Pilots earned points from senior Maja Mladenovic at the No. 3 spot and freshman Tatiana Grigoryan at No. 4.
The Cougars won in straight sets at the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions, and then Donika Bashota handed Portland's Lucia Butkovska her first dual singles loss of the season in three sets at No. 1.
The shorthanded Pilots missed two key players in the lineup for the fifth consecutive match as senior Saroop Dhatt and junior Jelena Lazarevic did not play singles.
Portland will take a break and return home to host the San Diego Toreros in West Coast Conference action on Saturday, March 26 at 11 a.m.
