PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots women's tennis team started off West Coast Conference play on a high note with a 6-1 win over the BYU Cougars Friday afternoon at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. It begins a busy week of tennis for the Pilots as the team will play three more matches in three different cities over the next six days.

Portland senior Lucia Butkovska, ranked No. 100 individually in the latest ITA Singles Rankings, remained unbeaten with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Mayci Jones. Butkovska improves to 5-0 this season.

The Pilots (2-5, 1-0 WCC) also had a straight sets singles victories from freshman Radina Dimitrova at the No. 2 spot with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Toby Miclat.

Senior Maja Mladenovic then clinched the match after gutting out a three-setter at the No. 3 position against Nicolette Poulsen. Mladenovic came back from an early first set deficit to win 7-5, then dropped the second set before pulling it out 6-3 in the third.

Freshman Tatiana Grigoryan won her second straight singles match at the No. 4 position. She clipped Savannah Ware in a three set super-tiebreaker.

Portland secured the doubles point as the freshmen duo of Dimitrova and Grigoryan won 6-1 at No. 3 and then Butkovska and Jelena Lazarevic won 6-4 at No. 1.

Portland continues play tomorrow morning against the Boise State Broncos (4-3) at 10 a.m. at the University of Oregon in Eugene. The Pilots will then fly to Southern California for a quick turnaround and match at UC Irvine (1-7) on Sunday at 11 a.m. Portland visits UC Santa Barbara (5-5) on Thursday at noon.
