INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The complete NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) were released on Wednesday and the University of Portland has maintained an elite level for another consecutive year. Each of the Portland's 15 programs from the 2014-15 academic year rated high on the scale and no teams are subject to penalties.
Among the four Division I universities in the state of Oregon, UP posted the highest APR in nine of the 15 sports in which it competes.
Looking at 2015 only, Portland had an overall rating of 989. Men's basketball, men's cross country, women's track, and volleyball each received a perfect APR score of 1,000 during the year.
"At the University of Portland we pride ourselves on pursuing excellence in both competition and in the classroom, and seeing that reflected in consistent elite APR numbers in each of our athletic programs is tremendous," said Portland Athletic Director Scott Leykam. "Academic integrity and graduating our student-athletes is the top priority at the University of Portland. We will continue to provide our student-athletes with the resources needed to maintain our good standing."
The women's cross country program recorded a perfect 1,000 multi-year APR score. 12 Pilot programs either maintained or increased their multi-year APR score from the previous year.
Men's soccer, women's cross country and women's indoor track received Public Recognition Awards. The Public Recognition Award goes to the programs that earn multiyear Academic Progress Rates in the top ten percent of all squads in each sport.
Each Division I team calculates its APR annually based on the eligibility and retention of scholarship student-athletes. Rates are based on the past four years of performance. Teams must achieve a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two years to participate in 2016-17 NCAA Championships.
