EUGENE, Ore. --- Woody Kincaid set a program record for the Portland Pilots in the 5,000m at the 2016 NCAA National Championships at Hayward Field on Friday night. Kincaid, a senior, just missed posting Portland's third straight podium finish at the 2016 Nationals, coming up just one second shy of eighth place, despite running at a blistering pace.
Kincaid completed the 12 and-a-half lap race in 13:32.49 to set a program record by a remarkable eight seconds. His time is also a personal record, clearing his previous best by 16 seconds.
Friday night's race was run at a quick pace, but Kincaid was able to hang with the lead pack for the majority of the race. Kincaid, who finished fifth in the 5,000 at last year's nationals, averaged a 4:20 mile this year, which was five seconds better than his pace last year.
The 2016 National Championships will conclude tomorrow with Lauren LaRocco as the sole Pilot competing. She will toe the line at 5:25 p.m. in the 5,000m looking to continue the success she saw in the 10,000m.
