VIDEO: Woody Kincaid Outkicks Galen Rupp
GRESHAM, Ore. –University of Portland's Woody Kincaid hit the Olympic Trials standard in the 5,000-meter run Thursday night at the Stumptown Twilight hosted at Mt. Hood Community College. Kincaid outkicked Galen Rupp to take second place overall with a time of 13:27.32 to set a new school record and eclipse the Olympic Trials automatic qualifying time of 13:28.00.
Kincaid's record breaking track season now extends to the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Team Trials scheduled for July 1-10 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The men's 5,000-meter run first round is scheduled for Monday, July 4 at 5:02 p.m. with the finals set for Saturday, July 9 at 5:20 p.m.
Kincaid bettered his previous school record time of 13:32.49 set earlier this month at the 2016 NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships, where he finished ninth overall to earn his second All-America award.
"This was another amazing race for Woody," Portland men's track and field head coach Rob Conner said. "He ran five seconds faster than he did at the NCAA Championships. He clocked 8:44 through the first two miles and then closed out the last mile in 4:10.3!"
Thursday's race came down to the wire as Kincaid battled with some of the top professional distance runners making their final tune-ups before the Olympic Trials. Kincaid outkicked Rupp (13:27.34), a 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist in the 10,000, and finished just behind race winner Justyn Knight of Syracuse (13:26.36).
Fellow Pilot Reid Buchanan, an All-American in the 10,000 at the NCAA Championships after a fifth-place finish, also competed in Thursday's event and finished 13
