SEATTLE, Wash. --- Redshirt Senior, Danny Martinez, capped off the first day of the UW Invite at the Dempsey Indoor facility with an impressive second place finish in the 5000 meter, setting a new personal record of 14:14.55. Redshirt sophomore, Gabriel Haughey, also competing in the 5000m, crossed the line within the top 10 with a ninth place finish.
 
The Distance Medley Relays ran just before the 5000m. The women's team consisting of freshmen Lacey Conner, Emily Bechen, Natalie Smith, and Maddy Lyons posted a time of 12:38.89. On the men's side, Trent Mazelli, Jack Welch, Brent Knutzen, and Sam Lomax ran a strong race, finishing third in their heat in a time of 10:20.05.
 
"Great start! Danny Martinez ran a personal best which is a great way to start senior year! I was really impressed with our distance medley relay men too," said men's head coach, Rob Conner. "Malcolm Roux had a great running leg with a time of 3:05."
 
Earlier in the afternoon, senior Madison Leek won her 200m heat with a time of 25.61. Freshmen Grace Bley, Michal Jones, and Maya Murphy-Cook also finished in the top of their heats with times just behind Leek in 26.64, 26.76, and 27.09, respectively.
 
"Madison Leek did a great job and got a nice win in her heat," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "She'll be ready for a good 400 this season."
 
The UW Invite will continue tomorrow beginning at 9:00 a.m. The schedule of events specific to Portland runners are listed below and the meet will be streamed live on FloTrack.
