PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots women's rowing team will be in downtown Portland this weekend to compete at the annual Portland Fall Classic, which is scheduled for Sunday morning on the Willamette River. The Pilots will be racing six boats at the classic, beginning with the varsity eight.
"We return seven rowers to our varsity eight this year and we're racing six boats on Sunday, so with our experience and depth I'm excited to see what we can do," Portland head coach Pasha Spencer said. "Also this will be our first time back on a river after training all fall at Vancouver Lake."
Portland's varsity eight will be the first boat to hit the water, which is scheduled for 8:36 a.m. The second eight follows a few minutes later as the event's format is a head race, which means crews will start one at a time with about 10-15 seconds in between each boat.
The entire course is 5000 meters in distance and results will be based on each boat's time.
Portland's varsity four is set to race at 10:58 a.m., and the second four will embark at 11 a.m. The novice eight and novice four boats cap the day for the Pilots, which are scheduled for 11:17 a.m. and 11:20 a.m., respectively.
The starting line for the Portland Fall Classic is located on the Holgate Channel of the Willamette River behind Ross Island. The course heads north and the finish line is near the floating section of the Eastbank Esplanade between the Burnside and Steel Bridges.
This is the first event for the Pilots since a successful spring season when Portland finished fourth at the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships. 18 UP rowers also landed WCC All-Academic honors last fall as well, and returning rower Veronica Nicacio was named All-WCC at the championships.
The Pilots are inviting fans to come cheer on the rowing team on Sunday at the UP team tent, where there will be complimentary refreshments and beverages. The team tent will be located north of the Portland Boathouse along the waterfront in the Festival Plaza.
