Portland Notes
• Portland opened the season with an
80-75 loss to Portland State on Saturday at the Chiles Center. Philipp Hartwich recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 18 rebounds, both career highs. The Pilots led by seven with less than three minutes left in regulation, but the Vikings closed the game with a 12-0 run to steal the win.
• The 18 rebounds by Hartwich are the most by a Pilot since Thomas van der Mars grabbed 18 against Portland State on Dec. 7, 2013. He also matched a career best with six blocked shots and is now third on the UP all-time charts with 93 blocks.
• Freshman G Marcus Shaver and sophomore JC transfer Josh McSwiggan led the Pilots with 15 points each in their Portland debuts.
• Terry Porter's 2017 recruiting class was ranked No. 10 nationally by HoopScoop.com. The class was the highest rated in the WCC and No. 2 class nationally among mid-major schools. Nine newcomers comprised the class with seven freshmen and two junior college transfers.
• Portland took an August foreign tour to England and went 3-1 on the trip. The Pilots defeated 2017 British Basketball League runner-up Newcastle on a buzzer-beater by Franklin Porter, dropped a buzzer beater to BBL Champions Leicester, and posted two comfortable wins against academy teams.
• The Pilots will take part in the prestigious PK80 Invitational hosted at the Rose Quarter Thanksgiving Weekend. UP will open against defending champions North Carolina Thanksgiving morning on ESPN.
• Saint Mary's was the unanimous pick to win the WCC, according to head coaches in the league's preseason poll. Gonzaga was second, while the Pilots were picked ninth among the 10 teams.Â
• The Pilots hosted two exhibition games defeating Lewis & Clark College (103-61) and falling to Eastern Washington (76-70)
