PALM DESERT, Calif. – Portland senior Michail Pervolarakis won two singles matches against seeded opponents in dominant fashion on Friday to reach the consolation semifinals at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. He opened the day with a win against highly-rated freshman Michael Geerts of Arizona State and then defeated No. 59 Johannes Ingildsen of Florida in the afternoon.
It was a dominant day of tennis for the No. 95-ranked Pervolarakis on Friday. Facing the tournament's No. 11 seed in Geerts, he cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 victory against the No. 4 ranked newcomer to college tennis. He then faced Ingildsen, the No. 10 seed in the tournament, and raced to a 6-2, 6-1 win.
"Today was another great example of never knowing when things are going to turn around," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Twenty-four hours ago, Mike was scrapping just to get through his first round of consolation and then over the course of the last five hours absolutely demolished two very high ranked players. It was an absolute pleasure sitting on his court and watching the level of tennis he was playing today. It just shows you how important it is to have a short memory in tennis, or any sport. Since yesterday we have been talking about all the things that can go well and that he does well rather than dwelling on his struggles over the last couple of days. He told me this morning that he felt he was going to play very well today and he couldn't have been more right."
Pervolarakis will move on to face No. 51 Alex Knight of Michigan in the consolation semifinals on Saturday. The winner will advance to the consolation finals scheduled for Sunday.
He opened the tournament on Wednesday with a loss to Minnesota's ITA Central Regional champion Stefan Milicevic and then responded in the consolation draw with a three set win against Toby Boyer of Nebraska on Thursday.
Players qualified for the tournament through designated placings at earlier ITA National Championships and the ITA Regional Championships Presented by Oracle. Pervolarakis earned his qualification by winning the ITA Northwest Regional Championship hosted at Pacific. A full breakdown of the selection criteria is availableÂ
here.
Pervolarakis is the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year after leading the Pilots to their first league regular season title in 2017. He entered the fall season ranked No. 95 inÂ
the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings and has posted a 11-3 record thus far and 2-1 mark against ranked foes.Â
