PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's track and field teams will compete this Friday and Saturday at the MPSF Championships at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle, Wash.
Â
"The MPSF meet is what we point toward as a program during the indoor season," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "It is a great opportunity for everyone on the team to run a personal best in their primary event."
Â
Established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from conferences on the west coast, along with other selected universities in the western United States, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation provides Division-I competition to schools whose primary conferences do not sponsor championships in selected sports.
Â
15Â men's teams and 20Â women's teams representing the West's top track and field programs will participate in MPSF Championships, with members from the Big West, Pac-12, and West Coast Conferences making this weekend's championship the largest the meet has ever been.
Â
Portland senior Madison Leek and junior Taryn Rawlings have each broken school records earlier this season in the 200m and the mile, respectively. This weekend Leek will compete in the 60m and 400m, while Rawlings will attempt to break her previous school record (4:43.14) in the mile. Rawlings will also run in the 3000m while in Seattle and ranks seventh all-time at UP.
Â
Redshirt sophomore and three-time All-American Lauren LaRocco and seniors Anna Farello, Anne Luijten, and Parkes Kendrick will continue to knock at the door of the UP all-time records in the 3000m on Saturday. LaRocco already holds the overall record (9:16.66) at UP in the event, while Luijten ranks just behind in second (9:22.07), followed by Farello in fourth (9:27.16) and Kendrick at ninth all-time (9:38.47).
Â
"We're excited for the MPSF meet and all of our top people are ready to compete," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "To be in a conference that includes the entire Pac-12 plus BYU makes for unbelievably competitive distance races, so this is an awesome opportunity for us."
Â
On the men's side, junior Jeff Thies (8:06.52) and senior Brady Johnson (8:07.23) rank seventh and ninth all-time at Portland in the 3000m, and they will also look to set new personal records this weekend. Thies and Johnson will compete in the 5000m on Friday as well.
Â
Sophomore Trent Mazelli ranks seventh all-time at Portland in the 800m, and he will attempt to continue to climb the career charts in the 800m this weekend. On Saturday he will shift his focus to the mile.
