SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland guards Alec Wintering and Jazz Johnson earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention awards, the league announced on Tuesday. It marks the third year in a row that Wintering earned all-conference recognition, despite missing the final 13 games with a season-ending knee injury. Johnson earned his first WCC award after averaging 15.5 points per game.
Gonzaga junior guard Nigel Williams-Goss captured Player and Newcomer of the Year honors for the Bulldogs, while Mark Few extended his own conference record, capturing his 11th Coach of the Year plaque. Saint Mary's senior guard Joe Rahon collected Defensive Player of the Year accolades after propelling the No. 20/18 Gaels to new heights during the regular season.
Â
All four individual awards – along with the All-WCC Teams and the All-Freshman Team – were voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.
Â
Wintering was averaging 19.5 points per game when he was injured on Jan. 19 at San Francisco. He was among the national leaders in scoring, assists (5.6), steals (2.0) and minutes per game (37.1) this season. He ranked in the top three of each of those categories in the West Coast Conference. The Charlotte, N.C. native earned All-WCC first team honors a season ago and second team recognition as a sophomore.
Wintering finishes his career with 568 total assists, five shy of the school record held by Pilot Hall of Famer and former NBA standout Darwin Cook. He also ranks second all-time in steals (177), fifth in points (1,548) and games started (110), sixth in three-point percentage (.401) and is the school's career leader in free throws made (499).
Johnson has had a breakout sophomore season and is one of two Pilots to start all 31 games. He has reached double figures in scoring 30 times and is shooting 44 percent from the field, 41 percent from three-point range and 81 percent at the foul line. The Portland native ranks second in the conference in free throw percentage, seventh in scoring and 11th in three-point percentage.
Portland and the rest of the conference will now travel to Las Vegas for the 2017 WCC Championships hosted at the Orleans Arena. The Pilots will face San Diego on Friday at approximately 8 p.m. in the opening round with the winner advancing to take on No. 18 Saint Mary's on Saturday at 9 p.m. on ESPN2.
