PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland extended its home winning streak to 16 matches with a 7-0 sweep of the Montana State Bobcats in non-conference men's tennis action on Tuesday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center.
The Pilots finish the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 10-1 overall record, while the Bobcats drop to 4-8 on the season.
"I think overall we did well today based on the fact that it was our fourth match in five days," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We are coming off a couple of very tight matches that we won and I was hoping that we could keep our level high today even though we were the favorites in this match. I think we did a good job. For one of the few times this year, we won all three doubles matches, and everyone won pretty handily in singles."
Portland opened by sweeping the doubles point comfortably. Jamie Fisher and Carlos Donat improved to 2-1 as a tandem this spring with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. Pierre Garcia and Felix Fan then clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2. Michail Pervolarakis and Mathieu Garcia, the reigning West Coast Conference doubles team of the week, kept the momentum going with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot.
Singles followed the same pattern as Mathieu Garcia cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Adrian Torrico at No. 2. Pierre Garcia quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Rok Sitar at the No. 2 spot and then Pervolarakis clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kellen Bates at No. 1.
The bottom of Portland's lineup also cruised as Donat and Fan each won in straight sets. Junior Goutham Sundaram, making his first appearance in the singles lineup this spring, posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 6 position over Dylan Harvala.
"It was nice to see Goutham get his first singles dual match victory today," Gross noted. "He was a little nervous to begin with, but stepped his level up as the match progressed and finished well."
Portland will now shift the focus to the WCC schedule which begins with a Bay Area road trip to San Francisco and Santa Clara on March 24-25. The Pilots will return home to host BYU on March 31 and San Diego on April 1 with both matches starting at 10 a.m.
