PORTLAND, Ore. --- Freshman Michal Jones landed seventh all time on the UP top-10 outdoor record list in the 400m hurdles, as the Portland Pilots men's and women's track and field teams concluded competition at the Lewis and Clark Spring Break Open in the Griswold Stadium earlier today.
Â
Sophomore Noah Schutte began the day leading the Pilots in the 3000m-steeplechase with his first place finish (9:06.96). Redshirt sophomore Joe Horen was just behind him in second (9:11.86), while junior Jeff Thies finished fourth (9:20.59). In the 1500m, sophomore Trent Mazelli ran an impressive race, executing a splintering kick to produce a personal record and another first place finish (3:55.15). Junior Carter Aebi crossed the line at 3:56.90 for a third place finish and senior Alex Dillard (4:01.66) and sophomore Sam Lomax (4:03.06) placed eighth and ninth to close out the top-10 for the Pilots.
Â
"This steeplechasers set the tone right off the bat," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "Noah, Joe, and Riley were really impressive in their season debuts in the 3000 steeplechase. As the season progresses, those guys have a great opportunity to post a regional qualifier. Trent and Carter did a great job in the 1500m. Trent won it with a 57 second final lap. It was a big negative split effort, so they are really ready to go faster once we get some better weather and competition. Overall, we got good performances from all the men and several nice PRs. (Conor Johnson, Ryan Clarke, Rory Johnston, Cole Shugart, and Andrew Jenck).
Â
On the women's side, senior Madison Leak had a standout performance in both the 200m and the 400m, posting a personal record in the 200 with a time of 25.03. Leek then went on to finish second overall (57.61) in the 400m. Murphy-Cook also won her heat in the 100m with a time of 12.66.
Â
"Our sprinters did a great job today," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "With a couple heat wins in the 100 and a top 10 performance by Michal Jones in the 400 hurdles. Dylan Hite and Maddy Lyons also really impressed me with their tough racing in the steeple and the 1500."

The Pilots will next be in action on March 25 at the Willamette Invite in Salem, Ore.
