PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilot's men's and women's track and field teams will head to Salem, Ore., this weekend to compete in the Willamette Invitational at McCulloch Stadium.
Â
Senior Kaylie Van Loo, who earned All-American Honorable Mention last spring at nationals, will throw the Javelin this weekend and senior Madison Leek, who sits third all-time in the UP record books in the 400m, will compete alongside sophomore Dani Castillo and freshman Michal Jones also in the 400m.
Â
"This is always a fun meet and a good opportunity for many of our runners," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "I'm really looking forward to the 5k, where we should have several women under 17 minutes."
Â
On the men's side, redshirt freshman Caleb Webb will be making his first appearance of the season in the men's 1500m. Sophomore Trent Mazelli, who has produced impressive times in both the indoor and outdoor season this year, will also again compete in the 1500m attempting to improve last week's 3:55.15 personal record at the Lewis and Clark Spring Break Open.
Â
"The Willamette Invitational is always a meet that gets circled on the calendar," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "We look forward to it every year. This will be the season debut for Caleb Webb. He has put together a really good month of training so we want to check his fitness with a 1500. He will be in with Trent and Carter who have been two of our most consistent guys so far this season. Joe is going to run another steeplechase; he got off to a great start last week so we want him to just focus on his hurdling and not worry too much about the ending time. Sam Lomax will be our top entry in the 5000 as he had a big PR at indoors running 14:37 so we'd like to expect something in that vicinity again."
