SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Toreros remained perfect in West Coast Conference women's tennis action with a 4-0 win over the Portland Pilots Sunday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Pilots fall to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in WCC play, while the Toreros improve to 7-9 and 3-0 in league action.
San Diego edged the Pilots for the doubles point in a tightly contested affair. At No. 1 doubles, Portland senior Jelena Lazarevic and freshman partner Jelena Lukic knocked off Colomba DiFilippo and Daniela Morales by a 6-3 margin. San Diego's No. 3 team won by a 6-4 margin and then the No. 2's won in a close tiebreaker to clinch the point.
Lukic and fellow freshman Emily Soares pushed their singles matches at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively, to third sets, but San Diego clinched the match with straight set wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions.
Pilot freshman Anna Oberg dropped her first set and was trailing 5-4 in the second when the Toreros clinched.
The Pilots will return to Portland and open a four-game homestand starting on Saturday at 10 a.m. against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The match will begin at 10 a.m. with live video and scoring available at PortlandPilots.com.
