SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland juniors Melanie Martinell and Lauren Reid and sophomore Acacia Welsford all landed on the 2016-17 West Coast Conference Women's Rowing All-Academic team as 18 Pilots total received recognition. Martinell and Reid both earned all-academic honorable mention last year, while this is the first academic recognition for Welsford.
 
Martinell, Reid and Welsford all row on Portland's varsity eight boat, which won the gold medal at the Covered Bridge Regatta earlier this spring. The crew also posted the program's fastest time ever on the Lake Natoma course en route to second place at the Sacramento State Invitational, and they placed second at the Husky Open, finishing behind only No. 4 Washington.
 
Martinell is a computer science major with a 3.60 cumulative GPA, while Reid boasts a GPA of 3.65 and is majoring in accounting. Welsford, a history major, has a sparkling GPA of 3.94.
 
Earning all-academic honorable mention for the Pilots are Madeline Bettinger-Lobash, Hannah Burns, Megan Del Pozzi, Kiva Goodman, Maddie Goodwin, Mariah Graham, Lauren Jesse, Jess Mann, Megan Medalia, Veronica Nicacio, Catherine Pennie, Celina Perez, Courtney Schmidt, Alyssa Soete, Brianne Zyblicki.
 
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to their team. No fewer than 84 WCC student-athletes met the academic criteria for women's rowing.
