2017-18 Schedule I
PK80 Invitational
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's basketball team released its 2017-18 schedule on Tuesday. In addition to taking part in the prestigious
PK80 Invitational over Thanksgiving weekend, the Pilots will play as many as 13 games against teams that competed in the postseason a season ago, play five games in current or former NBA arenas, while 16 of the 31 regular season games will be played at home at the Chiles Center.
PK80 will pit the Pilots against defending NCAA champion North Carolina on Thanksgiving morning at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN. Portland will then face either Oklahoma or Arkansas on Friday, Nov. 24 and then complete the tournament on Sunday, Nov. 26.
Portland is looking to fill an unexpected opening on the schedule with one more game on either Nov. 18 or Nov. 19 at the Chiles Center. That game will complete the schedule and should be finalized this week.
"Being a part of PK80 is a phenomenal opportunity for our program," head coach Terry Porter said. "We built the rest of our schedule around that weekend and wanted to give our fans and our young roster as many home games at the Chiles Center as possible. The non-conference schedule will prepare us well for West Coast Conference play."
The regular season tips off against crosstown rival Portland State on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Chiles Center. Other notable non-conference home games include Cal State Fullerton (Dec. 6), San Jose State (Dec. 9) and Hartford (Dec. 19).
Portland will have a minimum of five
nationally televised games on ESPN Networks and have a regular presence in NBA arenas throughout the non-conference schedule.
PK80 will have three games take place at the Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland at the present and past home of the Portland Trail Blazers. The renewed Pacific Northwest matchup with Seattle University will be played at KeyArena on Dec. 16, the former home of the Seattle Supersonics. The Pilots will also play at the home of the Sacramento Kings when Portland visits Sacramento State on Dec. 21 as part of a college hoops doubleheader with Kansas and Stanford to follow.
Portland's other non-conference road game will be at NIT second round participant Boise State on Sunday, Dec. 3.
WCC play begins with a pair of postseason teams the first weekend. The Pilots visit BYU (NIT) on Thursday, Dec. 28, before returning home to host San Francisco (CBI) on Dec. 30. The team will then visit 2017 NCAA runner-up Gonzaga on Thursday, Jan. 11 in Spokane, Wash., before returning home to host Pacific on Saturday, Jan. 13 in a coaching matchup featuring former Portland Trail Blazer standouts Terry Porter and Damon Stoudamire.
The league schedule continues and is highlighted by the Pilots hosting Gonzaga in a national TV game on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. before heading south to face NCAA Second Round participant Saint Mary's on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Moraga, Calif.
Five of Portland's eight league games in February will be played at home, including Saint Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 17 and then BYU for Senior Night on ESPNU on Thursday, Feb. 22. The regular season concludes at Pepperdine on Saturday, Feb. 24 and the WCC Championships are scheduled for March 1-6 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The league will be celebrating 10 years of hosting the WCC Championships in Las Vegas this spring.
Porter is set to begin his second season on the sidelines with the Pilots and will have a lot of new faces on the 2017-18 roster after the program signed a decorated nine-player class to join four returners and two returning redshirts. The Pilot incoming class has been ranked as high as
No. 10 nationally by Hoop Scoop.
