DAVIS, Calif. – Three Portland men's tennis players advanced in singles after the first day of play at the Aggie Invitational Friday hosted at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Pilots also went 2-2 in doubles play on the day and tournament action will continue on Saturday morning.
Freshmen Tom Hann and Drew Davison both won in straight sets in their first official collegiate action. They each advanced to the Round of 16 in the 'B' draw where they will face Dominic Barretto (Cal) and Kamran Khan (Santa Clara), respectively.
Senior Pierre Garcia overcame a first set loss to win in three against Santa Clara's Vasileios Iliopoulos in the 'A' draw. Garcia will face the No. 5 seed in the draw, Ruadhan O'Sullivan of Gonzaga, on Saturday morning.
"We had a great day in singles today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Pierre fought back after losing the first set and showed a lot of maturity in staying positive and working through the match. Tom and Drew both picked up their first collegiate singles wins as well. There were definitely some nerves there, but it was great to see them handle it well."
Garcia teamed with Hann to post an 8-4 doubles win against the team of David Goulak and Everett Maltby from the host Aggies. The duo then dropped an 8-5 decision to the No. 2 seeded team of Connor Heap and Bjorn Hoffman of Cal.
Davison and Newell dropped their opening doubles match, but bounced back for an 8-5 victory against Louis Chabut and Bernardo Moraes of Sacramento State. Both Pilot tandems will play consolation matches on Saturday morning.
"We won two out of our four doubles matches, which isn't bad considering these teams have never played together and two out of the four players are freshmen," Gross added. "Overall we had a great day of tennis. We were tested in some challenging ways and came through. We are scheduled for two singles matches for each player tomorrow, so conditioning will definitely come into play as the day goes on. I'm looking forward to some good opportunities to watch the young guys battle."
