PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland's home win streak at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center extended to 24 matches with a 4-0 sweep of Gonzaga in West Coast Conference men's tennis action Sunday afternoon. The Pilots improved to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Bulldogs dropped to 6-2 and 0-1 in conference.
The Pilots grabbed the early lead by winning the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Mathieu and Pierre Garcia teamed up for a 6-2 win at No. 2 against Vincent Rettke and Kyle Everly, while Carlos Donat and Jamie Fisher clinched with a 7-5 win versus Simon Homedes Dualde and Hunter Egger.
The top of the Pilots singles lineup then took care of business with straight set wins at the top three positions.
No. 36-ranked Michail Pervolarakis made quick work of Sam Feit with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot. Pervolarakis had missed the previous three matches due to injury, but was on form Sunday.
Pierre Garcia then overcame a slow start to win the first set 7-5 and cruise 6-0 in the second set against Hunter Egger at No. 3 singles. Mathieu Garcia clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Ruadhan O'Sullivan at the No. 2 position.
"We were not about to take Gonzaga lightly," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "They have a really good young squad and had only dropped one match this year. We knew they were confident and I felt we rose to the occasion, especially in singles. Pierre was key. He was down some set points, survived, and then did not lose another game. Mathieu beat the same player that beat him up pretty badly a couple of years ago on the same court, and you cannot say enough about Mike. He is just so solid."
The Pilots will return to action on Sunday when the No. 41-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers visit the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center for an 11 a.m. match. Live video and point-by-point scoring will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
