PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland extended its men's tennis home winning streak to 21 matches with a 7-0 sweep of Portland State Saturday afternoon at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. It marks the second straight win for the Pilots who improve to 2-3, while the Vikings fall to 2-2 overall.
"Portland State always plays really hard," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "They didn't lay down at any position and that was good for our guys. We are coming off a streak of playing four Top 50 teams and so this could have been a natural let down, but they played with a lot of energy so I think that forced our guys to raise our level."
Portland took early lead by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to grab the opening point. Mathieu and Pierre Garcia teamed up for a 6-1 win at No. 2, while Carlos Donat and Jamie Fisher clinched with a 6-4 win at No. 3. Avery West and Tommy Edwards took No. 1 doubles for the Vikings by a 7-5 margin.
Mathieu Garcia started the singles scoring with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Edwards. Michail Pervolarakis, ranked No. 18 nationally, battled Nathan Boniel at the top of the lineup and pulled out a 7-5, 6-3 victory to improve to 4-0 in dual singles action this year.
Pierre Garcia clinched the match with a comeback win at No. 3 singles. West took the opening set, but Garcia then won 6-1 in the second and 6-3 in the third.
Donat won a three-setter at No. 4 against Sam Roberts, while Portland's two freshmen picked up wins at the bottom of the lineup. Tom Hann cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 against Otto Holtari, while Drew Davison made his dual debut and defeated Majeed Bukhari by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.
"The last ten days have been a whirlwind," Gross said. "Lots of travel and lots of tough competition in different conditions. Obviously, we would have liked to have another win or two, but we are definitely a better team at the end of this tough stretch and looking forward to what is to come."
Portland hosts Idaho on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. Live scoring and video for that match will be available at
