SALEM, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's track and field teams completed their opening weekend of the outdoor season, Saturday afternoon at the Willamette Open in Salem, Ore.

Sophomore Maya Murphy-Cook led the women with a first place overall finish in the women's 200m with a time of 26.48. In the 1500 meters, freshman Susan Van Weperen also ran a solid raceways as the top collegiate finisher, placing second overall, with a time of 4:42.95. Van Weperen was followed closely by a trio of Pilots who placed four in the top six. Junior Dylan Hite placed fourth (4:47.90), and freshmen Katelyn Shultz (4:51.15) and Emily Bechen (4:55.07) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

"This was a fun meet and a great start to the outdoor season," said women's assistant coach Ian Solof. "Samantha Walsh and Katelyn Schultz both really impressed me with good racing and nice improvements."

On the men's side, junior Trent Mazelli placed second overall in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:56.90. Joe Horen (3:59.03), Henry Hayes (3:59.51), Malcom Roux (4:00.64), Sam Lomax (4:02.13), and Conor Johnston (4:02.44) finished just behind Mazelli, placing six in the top eight. Johnston and Horen's times both marked new personal records.

In the 5000, junior Tristan Peloquin led the Pilots with a second place finish (15:12.35), just behind former Pilot, Danny Martinez won the event with a time of 14:20.18.

"Particularly for the guys who didn't race indoors, this was a great opportunity to re-engage with the mental and physical components of racing," said men's and women's assistant coach Jack Mullaney. "Moving forward the experience will help us be better prepared for our target races later this season.

The Pilots will next return to track in two weeks at the L&C Spring Break Open at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore.
