SAN FRANCISCO, Calif./ STANFORD, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's track and field teams competed at the SF State Distance Carnival and Stanford Invite on Friday, at Chabot College and Cobb Track and Angell Field. Several Pilots posted new personal records and seven moved up the all-time record lists.
Â
At the SF Distance Carnival both sophomore Maddy Lyons and junior Dylan Hite ran strong races in the 1500m and the 3000m steeplechase. Lyons posted a time of 4:31.20 to record a new pr, while Hite moved up to 6
th all-time finishing in 10:51.51.Â
Junior Taryn Rawlings also had an impressive race for the women in the 5000m at Stanford moving up to second all-time with a time of 15:49.38.
"We had lots of great performances, highlighted by Taryn's 15:49 in the 5K," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "Dylan Hite and Maddy Lyons also impressed me with their excellent racing and nice PRs."
Five of the six Pilots that moved up the UP all-time records competed at the Stanford Invite. Junior Simon Grannetia, who was already ninth all-time, ran an exceptional steeplechase to move up to fifth (8:42.91).
"This has to go down as the greatest single day in Pilot track history," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "We were ten for ten on personal bests today and nine of those performances are likely to be regional qualifiers. Amazing! All three of our steeplers ran fantastic. Simon finished very impressively over the last 1000. That was Riley's first outdoor performance in uniform and he established a new freshman school record in the steeple.
Junior Trent Mazelli recorded a new personal record of 3:43.57 to move up to seventh, and both junior Noah Schutte sophomore Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse jumped to third (28:34.51) and eighth (28:55.50) in the men's 10,000m invitational.
"Trent made a big breakthrough today," said Conner. "His 3:43 converts to a 4:00 mile and I think he has more in the tank because there were a few tactical things that he can improve on.The performance of the night however belonged to Noah! He dropped a :31 pr and surprised everyone at the meet! Our whole 10,000 crew was really impressive considering we have had several of them dinged up lately."
"Now that we know we have a large group focused on regionals we will take a light week and recover from this meet. Then it is full speed ahead," said Conner. "I couldn't be prouder that the hard work and focus of this group has paid off so far."
Sophomore Joe Horen also ran well in the men's 3000m steeplechase, improving his time to 9:00.38.
Both the men's and women's track and field teams will be back in action on April 19 at the Mt.Sac Relays and Bryan Clay Invite.
